Alia and Kriti Crowned Best Actresses at National Film Awards 2023 for Gangubai Kathiawadi & Mimi


The National Film Awards, considered among India's most prestigious film accolades, are held annually in New Delhi, graced by the presence of the President of India. This revered event was temporarily halted for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the 68th National Film Awards recognized films from 2020. As of this evening, August 24, the 69th National Film Awards have been announced during a press meet in New Delhi. Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon, in a momentous occasion, clinched their maiden National Film Awards as Best Actresses for their outstanding performances in "Gangubai Kathiawadi" and "Mimi," respectively.


At the 69th National Film Awards, Alia Bhatt and Kriti Sanon secured their inaugural National Film Awards for Best Actress, with Alia's remarkable performance in "Gangubai Kathiawadi" and Kriti's outstanding role in "Mimi."


"Gangubai Kathiawadi," a 2022 Hindi biographical crime drama helmed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and jointly produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada, features Alia Bhatt in the titular role. The film's ensemble cast includes Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh, and Ajay Devgn.


"Mimi," a 2021 Hindi comedy-drama directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, is a remake of the 2011 Marathi film "Mala Aai Vhhaychy!" Kriti Sanon takes on the lead role as a surrogate mother for a foreign couple, with Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak, Evelyn Edwards, and Aidan Whytock in supporting roles.


The announcement of the 2023 National Film Awards winners commenced at 5 p.m. today. Viewers could watch the event live on the official social media handles of PIB India and the I&B Ministry, as well as on their YouTube channel and Facebook page. Prior to the winners' revelation, there was significant anticipation on social media, with Alia Bhatt and Kangana Ranaut's names circulating as potential Best Actress contenders for "Gangubai Kathiawadi" and "Thalaivi," respectively.
