In 2023, the top-grossing film was 'Animal,' starring Ranbir Kapoor and showcasing a intricate father-son dynamic with Anil Kapoor in the paternal role. Although receiving mixed critical reviews, the movie created buzz online and at the box office. Interestingly, Anil Kapoor, usually cautious about on-screen fatherly roles, disclosed that he took on Zoya Akhtar's 'Dil Dhadakne Do' because of Ranbir Kapoor's initial involvement.
Anil Kapoor Credits Ranbir Kapoor for Dil Dhadakne Do Decision
"A few days post the OTT premiere of 'Animal,' Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol engaged in a discussion with Netflix India. When questioned about his perspective on the father-son dynamic,
Ranbir reminisced about his pre-debut days while preparing for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 'Saawariya' at Anil's house alongside Sonam Kapoor. Reflecting on his early career, Ranbir shared that Anil Kapoor, during those rehearsals under Roshan Taneja, had expressed, “I never play fathers’ roles, but I will play your father’s role. So he had told me this at that point in time.’
He further added,“ I remember when he was doing Dil Dhadakne Do, he used to talk to me so much,” while Anil intervened to reveal, “You (Ranbir Kapoor) were doing the film. When I said yes, you were doing the film.”
Ranbir continued by spilling that the veteran actor was in a dilemma even at that point in time, wondering whether he should take the role or not. “I remember when the promo came, 90 percent of the audience was like, but he doesn’t look like a father, he looks like an elder brother. It’s because he has kept himself that way.”
Indeed, Ranveer Singh took on the role initially considered for Ranbir Kapoor in Zoya Akhtar's 2015 film Dil Dhadakne Do. The star-studded cast included Priyanka Chopra, Shefali Shah, Anushka Sharma, Rahul Bose, Vikrant Massey, and more.
Recently, Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal premiered on OTT on January 26, featuring Rashmika Mandanna, Triptii Dimri, Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor, Prem Chopra, and others in significant roles.
